The Space
Tucked away in Toorak, The Arthouse is one of Melbourne's most visually layered and creatively distinctive locations, a period home of genuine architectural character, transformed through a bold and considered contemporary intervention that manages to feel both entirely coherent and completely surprising.
The original front of the home retains its Victorian bones in full. A formal sitting room with bay windows, ornate ceiling rose, dado lines, deep cornices and a richly veined marble fireplace is dressed in Dulux Timeless Grey — moody, considered and utterly cinematic. A large gold framed mirror anchors the space against the dark palette, while original artwork and eclectic objects give every corner something worth looking at.
Through a glazed courtyard link, planted with a mature tree growing skyward through an open atrium, the home opens into an entirely different world. The extension is light, warm and alive with colour and form. Deep forest green kitchen joinery pairs with a Calacatta marble splashback and island bench, blonde timber floors and ribbed cream brick walls that run the full length of the open plan living space. Designer furniture is everywhere and deliberately so — the yellow Roly Poly chair, the Frank Gehry cardboard stool, a Nanimarquina floral rug, sculptural timber dining chairs and richly upholstered low sofas in mustard, caramel and olive green.
One bedroom and one bathroom are complemented by multiple distinct living zones, a fully equipped kitchen and a courtyard that connects the two halves of the home in a way that feels considered and quietly theatrical.
For productions and photographers, The Arthouse offers something rare, genuine visual contrast within a single location, shifting from formal and moody to warm and playful without a single step outside.
