Victorian Architecture in the Land Down Under
Depending on where you live in Australia, you may just be situated on a street lined with Victorian period homes, marked by their unapologetic devotion to ornament and maximalist interior design.
What is Victorian Architecture?
The term refers not to a particular style, but to the reign of Queen Victoria over the United Kingdom from the mid nineteenth century to the early twentieth. During this time there was an explosion in construction. Despite the architecture having originated in England, several styles spread globally. The quality and intricate details of these buildings still remain prominent across Australia today.
Victorian era architecture spanned more than 60 years and was influenced by a diverse range of styles. Some include, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Romanesque Revival and the popular Queen Anne. However to comprehend the great era with a little more ease, Victorian architecture can be grouped into three main periods - Early (circa 1804 - 1860), Mid (1861 - 1875) and Late (1876 - 1901).
Early Victorian architecture was far more minimalist to its later developments. The houses built during this time can be described as a 'worker's cottage.' Exposed brick, pitched roofs, small garden entrance and unadorned ceilings are their typical characteristics.
Mid Victorian architecture saw details introduced. This style commonly features cast iron lace work, ornament and flourish, colourful bricks, generous wraparound porches and decorative interiors, such as stained glass windows and ceiling roses.
Moving onto the Late Victorian era of architecture, these houses will feature ornamental parapets, grand arches, decorative brick, rendering and bold colour schemes. The interior layout is commonly seen in homes across Australia today and has inspired ample contemporary design. Living and dining towards the front, kitchen at the rear and bedrooms off a central hallway or upstairs. Lavish multilevel homes to entertain were largely sought after.
Some fabulous cult favourite examples of Victorian architecture include Norman Bates' house in the horror film 'Psycho,' inspired by the Gothic Revival movement in the middle period.
And who can forget the fabulous house in the film 'Groundhog Day.' Another example of Mid Victorian architecture which can be accurately identified as 'Victorian Gingerbread.' The house still runs today as a Bed and Breakfast.
