Aussie TV ads

Some of our all time favourite Aussie TV ads

By: Simone Heydon | 26 August 2021

At A Perfect Space we often work with the advertising industry to find perfect spaces in which to shoot ads. We thought we’d take a walk down memory lane and look at some of the Aussie TV ads we loved growing up.

Not happy Jan!

Back in the day a listing in the Yellow Pages was an essential business tool. God help Jan who forgot to list the company she worked for! The catch phrase from this ad from 2000 is still used in the Aussie vernacular today.

Sic ‘em Rex

The year was 1989. A gorgeous backpacker in hot, humid room watches ants crawl over her body. She just happens to have a pet echidna that she’s trained for such an occasion. It was a pretty bizarre offering by Holeproof Antz Pantz at the time, but Aussie’s absolutely loved it.

I still call Australia home

Perhaps one of the best Aussie ads ever made, this 1998 Qantas classic takes us around the world against the backdrop of Peter Allan’s 1980 classic song, I Still Call Australia Home. It was such an incredible experience for the Australian youth choirs that got to appear in the ad.

Like a sunrise…

You look so hot today Rhonda! AAMI managed to make car insurance interesting when they brought us the love story of Rhonda and Ketut. Aussies became invested in the love affair between these two characters and rumour has it AAMI’s new business jumped 20% in the year it was launched.

Bugger!

Not really an Aussie ad but we’re including it! In 1999 The Toyota Hilux created the Bugger ad in New Zealand. It was pretty controversial at the time. Bugger was considered an offensive word by many and the lassoed cow getting its head ripped off offended a few people too. It was eventually censored in New Zealand and only allowed to run at certain times of the day, but Aussies loved this ad so much there were no restrictions on it here.

This goes with that…

Ah, Sussan.  Such a catchy jingle. Take a trip back to 1989 with this little beauty.

Marge the rains are ‘ere

Perhaps the most Aussie of our Aussie ads. We can all relate to a harsh drought. McCains was on the money with this 1997 classic. It was shot in Broken Hill in outback NSW and actually took five days to shoot because it did (ironically!) rain for a couple of days and they needed to wait to get the shot of the intense sun.

A hard earned thirst

We all grew up knowing what the “best cold beer” was! You could get it ridin’, slidin’, walkin’, talkin’ or workin’ a plough – so many ways to get it! This campaign for CUB’s VB has been around since before our TV screens became colour. Check out this black and white beauty from 1968.

Which one was your favourite?
